Finding a sealcoating contractor that will do a good job is very important these days. There are so many people in this service business these days it is best for you to learn everything you can about sealcoating to find the most qualified. Your asphalt is a very significant investment when it comes to your residential property or business, you want the best, for the best price.
You need to know: 1. Make sure they are not fly-by-nighter contractors (Gypsies).
These contractors will offer you discount deals, claiming they are saving you a lot of money. Most of the time these guys are putting down nothing but black water. They will dilute the asphalt sealer considerable with water. There is also a safety factor when dealing with these individuals. There have been cases where these guys have charged older people $1000.00, when the job would usually only cost $150.00. Ask for business card, website, office number, or a reference.
2. Know what type asphalt sealer your contractor will be using for your asphalt.
There are basically two types of asphalt sealer used today, one is water based sealer and another is coal-tar based. The coal-tar is longer lasting and able to protect the asphalt better against certain elements (rain, snow, ice, sun, antifreeze). Most water base sealers you can find in hardware stores such as Lowes and Home Depot. Coal tar sealers can be found from commercial sealer contractors, and your local hardware stores carry a few brands in 5 gallon buckets. You can seal coat your driveway yourself but don’t expect to get the sand mixed in the sealer like contractors use. To do this you need a large tank to mix the sand and sealer together like sealcoating contractor’s use. The sand gives the sealer a more textured surface keeping the asphalt from being so slippery when it’s wet. It also allows the asphalt sealer to last longer.
3. Know what type of sealer applications your contractor is going to use.
These are two basic applications for applying asphalt sealer. The first is using a squeegee and applying the entire surface by hand. This is also how home owner’s apply sealer their selves. The second application is having the sealer in a holding tank and pumped out of the tank through a hose and sprayed out of a nozzle tip onto the asphalt. This spray application is done twice for two strong even coats. Using the tank, an agitator is sometimes used to mix sand with the sealer.
4. Know if the asphalt sealer fix’s the cracks.
Only hairline cracks can be filled with asphalt sealer. You can have the larger cracks filled with crack filler. Alligator cracks need to be sawed and cut out, then replace and rolled with new asphalt. Do not let your sealcoating contractor apply sealer to any new asphalt that is under ninety days old. New asphalt needs time to cure before applying sealer.
5. What kind of Preparation work is involved in sealcoating.
The first thing your contractor will do is broom and blow off your entire asphalt surface. This will get any grass or dirt off the surface that will be keeping the sealer from sticking to the asphalt. Next if there are any oil spots that are not saturated into the asphalt more than 3/8, a primer will be added to the oil spot so the sealer will stick. Then all is left is to apply the asphalt sealer to the surface.

Working Capital Financing in Canada is provided in a number of different ways to Canadian business owners and financial managers. Like anyone, you would prefer to deal with an ‘expert ‘in business financing, so we encourage you to seek and speak to a trusted and credible business financing advisor in your area of working capital need.
Working Capital solutions are provided by our banks of course and also by what we will call non-bank independent finance firms. Smaller and medium sized firms are often better served by non- bank firms who have a better understanding in many cases of their business needs as it relates to receivables financing, inventory financing, purchase order financing, equipment leasing, etc.
Clients always bring up the issue of ‘government grants and loans ‘. There are some grant type programs out there but in general they do not serve the needs of the average Canadian business owner as they relate to working capital.
There are two very viable grant and loan programmes in our opinion. They are the government guaranteed Small Business Loan, aka CSBFL, aka SBL loan, as well as the federal SR &ED program. The Small business loan provides equipment and leasehold loans to Canadian business owners, and is not capped at a new high of $ 350,000.00. This in or opinion is a great term loan, and has excellent, we repeat, excellent rates, terms and structures. But the reality is that this is a term loan and is not a working capital loan per se. When clients come to us for ‘working capital loans ‘more often than not they are referring to cash flow needs for inventory, receivables, and equipment.
The other ‘ grant ‘ which in some ways could be construed as a working capital injection is the federal SR & ED program for your work on new products, services, and innovation in your business sector. This is a non – refundable grant that covers approximately 40% of all the cash you have spent in this area. We encourage all business owners in Canada, if it is applicable, to speak to an advisor in this area.
Most Canadian business owners are not aware of what is known as a cash flow loan. A more sophisticated finance term for this loan is a mezzanine or ‘sub debt’ loan. For smaller and medium sized businesses these loans tend to go up to the 250k range and are offered by a specialty lender which is funded by the Government of Canada. Larger cash flow and working capital loans tends to be in the 1 Million + range and are offered by non banks. These loans typically are unsecured, are used for cash flow purposes, and have rates in the low to mid teens due to their unsecured nature.
In summary, working capital means different things to different business owners. Our focus has been on real cash flow and cash flow for your business. Certain government programs might meet your needs in the areas of term loans, leasehold improvements, etc. But true working capital is the financing of current assets such as receivables, inventory, and purchase orders. A T1 is a digital high-speed circuit designed specifically for business telephony solutions. There are many advantages to using a voice T1 for your company. Consider these advantages when choosing voice T1 service.
How a T1 Works A T1 consists of 24 digital channels. These channels are flexible and can be used by anyone when they are free. A voice T1 can have both incoming and outgoing traffic on it. This means that you can convert your main telephone line to your T1 to provide more availability of incoming calls. The T1 channels are also used for outgoing calls. The next available line is used for making a call. All the telephone users share these lines. This flexibility makes much better utilization of the lines.
Companies can also take advantage of DID (direct inward dial) service. Purchase a bank of DID numbers and you can assign them to specific telephones in your company. For pennies a month your employees can enjoy the benefits of having their own phone number so that clients may reach them directly. This can also take some of the burden off your attendant. The T1 channels are used for both incoming and outgoing calls as needed. When deciding on the amount of T1s needed always allow for 10% growth or more if you are aware of upcoming peaks in your service.
Price Your company can save thousands of dollars per year when you switch from regular voice lines to a T1. The price of a T1 has come down recently partly due to the fact that most central office locations have already converted to digital infrastructure. Pricing is also competitive as more vendors offer T1 products to their customers. Because of its configuration a T1 is much more flexible than standard telephone lines and allows for more usage over the same amount of circuits.
A typical rule of thumb is to allow one T1 for each 50 to 100 employees. This is for standard voice service. If your business is phone intensive or if you operate a customer service center your needs may be increased. To determine the proper amount of T1s for your business you should first find out your current line usage. These reports are often available from your phone vendor. An engineer can often assist you in determining the correct amount of T1s for your specific application. Once the T1 is installed there are usually various usage reports that you can request which will help you to see if you are getting the best use of your T1 and whether you need to add an additional T1.
Speed A voice T1 transmits at a speed of 1.544 Mbps. This large bandwidth allows for instantaneous connections and clear, crisp sound. A T1 can carry more than 190,000 bytes per second making it faster than most standard modems. Any application can be run over a T1. As new applications become available they too can use the T1. Almost all digital data flows over fiber optic cables. The T1 may be brought to the location using copper wires and then put on fiber cables to run to your telephone room. The T1 is terminated onto a smart jack. This in turn is extended into your telephone system where the T1 is configured in routing.
Reliability and Service T1 lines are very reliable. If there is a problem it can often be solved quickly by using remote diagnostics. A CSU (Customer Service Unit) can be used to help provide a test point between your office and the central office of origin. You will typically get standard service during business hours that may include a technician visit to the site to resolve a problem. If your business has non-standard hours or operates 24/7 you will need to discuss service addition to your contract. Additionally, you may be able to use backup service in case of an outage, making the problem transparent to your customers.
